Wednesday 2 July saw the celebration of Between Heaven and Earth, a short film written and directed by Director of Content in Liberal Arts Mike Peel about the life of mountaineer George Mallory and his wife, Ruth.
The project was the first of an annual series of summer staff and student film collaborations that serve to both prepare film and screenwriting students for their final year productions and to showcase the quality of work produced by Regent’s students.
In the spirit of fostering collegiality on these productions, it’s not only Regent’s staff and students working together but also a collaboration across institutions, and this film included staff from University of the Creative Arts, Lancaster University and the Abbey Road Institute.
Reflecting the film’s subject matter, the team decided to make the evening a celebration of the Mallorys’ lives. Amongst the guests in attendance were Tom Newton-Dunn, Times journalist, George Mallory’s great-nephew and publisher of Mallory’s letters in the book, Letters from Everest, Kate Nicholson, author of Behind Everest, the Ruth Mallory biography, and
Rebecca Stephens, the first British woman to climb Everest.
The event started with a reading from Letters from Everest and Behind Everest by the cast of Between Heaven and Earth, Paul MacLaughlin and Jessica Frances.
Following the screening the special guests joined Michael Peel in a panel Q&A chaired by BA (Hons) Film and Screen Production Course Leader, Tristan Tull.

The event was well attended with the staff and student crew, and we saw graduates as well as many colleagues contributing to the Q&A, resulting in a really rewarding and fascinating discussion.
The team are already in pre-production for our 2025 summer project, with students flying back to take part in late August. Watch this space for more updates!
